Finding Renewal in the New Year
As the calendar turns to a new year, many of us reflect on the past and set resolutions for the year ahead. The idea of a fresh start resonates with us as humans, but for us as Christians, it holds an even deeper meaning. In our faith, renewal is not confined to January 1st. It is a daily, ongoing process grounded in God’s grace and love.
Scripture reminds us of this constant renewal. In Lamentations 3:22-23, we hear, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.” God’s mercies offer us a foundation for making resolutions that are not just about self-improvement but about aligning our lives with God’s purpose.
What might it look like to make resolutions inspired by our faith? Instead of focusing solely on personal goals, like losing weight or mastering a new skill, think about resolutions that deepen your connection with God and with others. Could this be the year you commit to regular prayer, join the Sunday morning Bible study, or volunteer with a ministry that serves those in need?
Maybe you don't like resolutions. Focus instead on surviving or thriving. The Baptismal Covenant that we reaffirm during this time of year provides a guide. Promises such as “Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?” and “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?” challenge us as well as providing a sense of comfort that God is not punitive, but is interested in relationship.
May our intentions for the year ahead reflect the mercy, love, and hope we have received, and may we carry those gifts into our families, communities, and beyond.
